RECESSION PROOF STYLE
We asked a few of our fashion-forward friends what they do to stay stylish on a budget! Whether you're re-inventing an item you already have, or digging through the discount racks, all you need is a little creativity to make your outfit pop!
Christian Erickson: Partner, Zeus Jones Design Agency
1. Druskin Outlet - definitely. So much great stuff there for half off the normal price. Still expensive, but just less so.
2. Nordstrom Rack - same as above. Great place for deals on actual good brands.
3. Target - they have been making really good basics like Polos for dudes that last forever and look awesome layered with more branded stuff.
4. A good cleaner and tailor. I have been trying to get all my old shirts pressed and fixed up so they feel like new again. And getting all my old jackets dry cleaned. It really does keep me from buying new.
Sallie Watson: The Mood Swings/Buyer for Target
I'd say shopping my own closet and not giving up on articles of clothing so quickly. I like looking for ways to reinvent them by mixing old pieces in new ways. Also working in inexpensive of-the-moment trendy stuff from Target, Forever21 and H&M -- you don't have as much invested and it's pretty much disposable. In addition, I like to scour the clearance racks and shop at Off 5th, Nordstrom Rack, DWS, etc. and finally, accessories can be a cheap and easy way to make outfits feel new again!
Colleen Guenther: Photography Manager
Tights, tights, and more tights.... no matter what you've got on, if you have a fabulous pair of patterned tights - you will look great! So, even though you may have a dingy outfit on, if you give the world one fabulous thing to focus on, they will forget the rest of the outfit! I suppose this could also go for a great hair piece, or a fabulous pair of shoes!
Beth Lorraine Bowman: Artist/ArtSpace ProjectsTry St. Vincent de Paul Thrift in West 7th. Small but top quality! Hugo Boss flats for $4. Farragammos for $4 as well. Clean, classic, good!
Megan Mitsch: Jewelry DesignerTrading clothes parties and swap boxes -- you bring them to your friends and trade out. I love Opitz, Drama sales rack, Heartbreaker tanks and leggings $7-$14, and garage sales in Kenwood! Sometimes I buy vintage and broken jewelry and remake it, or I buy old clothes for the buttons at garage sales and put them on a sweater or blazer to freshen the look. I also get vintage coats at estate sales or stores to pair with jeans and go buy some sexy shoes at Heartbreaker that are not spendy but super trendy.

Here's where sophisticated, professional men can put together a head-to-toe look that includes a shave and haircut at the attached parlor, even while more casual clients enjoy the collection of cigars, cufflinks, and top hats. Off-the-peg suits range from $465 to $800, while custom orders run from $695 to $1,200 and made-to-measure suits start at $1,200. Naturally, alterations are available on-site.

MALLS
Galleria

(952) 925-4321
Mon. - Fri., 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.; Sat., 10 a.m. - 8p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
This high-end mall features a nice mix of locally owned boutiques (see Twill by Scott Dayton, Len Druskin, Arafina, and Pumpz & Co.) and chain stores (BCBG, Barnes and Noble, Crate & Barrel, and L'Occitane). It's anchored by Gabberts, an upscale home furnishings shop that has been in the area since 1946.
Gaviidae Common
651 Nicollet Mall, Mpls.
(612) 372-1222
Mon. - Fri., 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Sat., 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Downtown Minneapolis businesses have, in recent years, struggled to find their customers, but Gaviidae offers urban dwellers the most options for boutique shopping. The anchor is Neiman Marcus on one end, Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth outlet on the other. The highly trafficked skyway level (ideal for avoiding snowy streets and automobiles) is lined with a growing number of boutiques (Len Druskin Man, for example). The lower level is also worth perusing (see Drama, StyledLife, and Pacifier).
Mall of America
60 E. Broadway, Bloomington
(952) 883-8800
Mon. - Sat., 10 a.m. - 9:30 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
You've undoubtedly heard of the largest mall in the country. Even though the title is sometimes disputed, the 4.2 million square foot facility boasts at least two novelties: Nickelodeon Universe, a theme-amusement park in the middle; and a walk-through aquarium (with sharks!) in the basement. Of course, there's plenty of shopping to do with four anchor department stores-Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom, and Sears-and about 520 shops in all. Lacoste, Burberry, Forever 21, Lego, Geox, and countless others are primed for browsing-and exercising. Minnesota's own Best Buy electronics store opens late summer 2008. One loop around a single level in this gigantic, four-story mall equals .57 mile.
Midtown Global Market
2929 Chicago Ave., Mpls.
(612) 872-4041
Mon. - Sat., 10 a.m. - 8p.m.; Sun., 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
In truth, this is more of an international bazaar than shopping mall. A quick walk around the buzzing marketplace finds food and souvenirs from nearly a dozen different cultures. Here's where you can snack on Italian delicacies and stock up on Asian groceries-not to mention buy a Tibetan talisman, an African handicraft, or an Indian sari.
Rosedale
10 Rosedale Ctr., Roseville
(651) 633-0872
Mon. - Sat., 10 am. - 9 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
There's good reason why Minnesota was the site of the first indoor mall: self-protection! The "Dales," the original collection of Twin Cities enclosed malls now managed separately, are full of skylights and open floor plans, and provide perfect hideouts from sub-zero temperatures and snowstorms. Rosedale is just one of these suburban malls (Southdale and Ridgedale are the others). Here the anchor stores are Herberger's, JCPenney, and Macy's; the other stores cover such familiar territory as Abercrombie & Fitch and Zumiez.
