As someone that has worked so many different sides of the media there are times when I question why I watch TV and still even like certain people on TV.
What is it that makes me unable to fall asleep at night unless I get a last minute peek at Don Shelby?
I had lunch with a buddy of mine recently and asked him if there was ever a person he admired and respected for their TV work.
He told me about an encounter with Wolf Blitzer of CNN at a basketball game. My friend said he walked up to Mr. Blitzer and commended him for his long hours on CNN and told him it was nice to see him take some time off to enjoy a basketball game. He did not attack him, grab him, interrupt him, follow him--none off that crazy stalker shit--just a simple compliment coming from one of his devoted viewers.
In a nutshell, Wolf's' response to his compliment was a few obnoxious words under his breath followed by the big "I am too good for you" look. This really hit a chord with me because I have never understood why there is this giant pedestal for people who choose to put themselves in front of a camera and then bark at the people who watch them and butter their bread.
I told my tall and handsome friend that he should have said back to him, "Hey shorty pants when are you going to retire? The make up is not working on the age spots anymore," but my friend is far more mature than I am.
Back to the topic of who is your favorite TV Star and why. My favorite Local TV STAR is....DON SHELBY.
Here is why:
Don is a passionate journalist by trade who isn't afraid to let his audience in on both the confident man in the stylish pin stripe suits as well as being honest about his years as an alcoholic, or his health scare. My favorite part about Don Shelby is his zest for crazy outdoor adventures that would probably never be attempted by most men half his age.
I like that Don does the one thing I was told never to do in journalism (gives a personal opinion) during his "In the Know" segments. Don's middle name is Gilbert (love that name.) I like that he has worked hard to get his current Project Energy going,
I like his afternoon show on WCCO radio, and that he gave up a premier anchor spot to Frank Vascellaro so that Frank and Amelia could delight us with their husband and wife anchor team at 6 p.m. and than comes back on at 10 every night wearing (yes I am going to say it) "his sexy suits" and that teeny little stud earring that keeps him as hip now as when I was a little Melinda.
But, hands down, what separates Don Shelby from the many people who make a living being in front of the camera is that what you see is what you get. You would think that's simple, but, in the TV business, many on-camera talents let their egos get the best of them and complain about being recognized when that little red light goes off.
I ask you to remember one thing that dawned on me as I was writing this story at a downtown Caribou Coffee and ran into Frank Vascellaro: Being humble and yourself is what really does separate the TV star from a TV STAR. Frankie your next!
As the media industry changes and the power of people on camera could change too, I can only hope that the next group of TV icons will take Shelby's lead and remain down to earth and remember who butters their bread.
You never know who could be walking in with the next fresh loaf.
I too - love Don Shelby.. he comes across so real and transparent, both on TV and the radio.
I would also encourage people to listen to Ian and Margery on FM 107 - of the talent on that station, they are the most authentic and very entertaining.
And kudos to WCCO for putting Amelia and Frank on - they have great chemistry and I believe are in line with the same transparency that Don exemplifies.
Tone E. Fly is my favorite TV STAR!!!! Don Shelby needs to retire and make room for the Fly Guy!!!!
My favorite TV star is Tone E. Fly. It doesn't seem like he's putting on an act for the camera, the person that you're watching on TV is exactly who Tone E. Fly is.
I like Don Shelby a lot. I only started hearing his radio show last year. Nice to listen to as I drive home from Work.
Great article, but wow, the above comments read my mind! Has anybody else been watching that show with Tone E. Fly? Love him! I can totally see him being the next local TV star.
My favorite media guy in town is the man behind the creative curtain at WCCO--Casey K. He should have a fan club. They just look better than the other TV stations.
Most TV people are talking heads. Tone E. Fly gets my vote too. We need a female counterpart.
Shelby is the man! He IS twin cities TV to me.
But yea I have to agree with all the others here and give mad props to Tone E. Fly - I used to listen to him all the time...wondered where he went for a while, and now suddenly he's a TV Superstar?? Who saw that coming?! Talented dude...
For sure Tone-Fly is my fav!! And that hot B-Right.. And can't forget about Danny... They rock FLY SHOW
Seriously?? Tone E. Fly??
LOL...
I thought I was the only one who watched his show every night!! Glad to see the fly guy is getting the credit he deserves. Even Don Shelby has more hair, but to me, Tone E. Fly is the twin cities TV Icon.
Yes Tony is not just a radio star but also a tv star too:)
Wow, Fly is taking this thing by storm haha...seen his show a couple times. Gotta say, the CW was awful until they added Tony Fly's 'late fly show' or whatever it's called - love him or hate him, he's probly got more star power than most TV "personalities" in the cities. And his show is hilarious.
What a sweet, sweet article. Don Shelby is a local legend, and a kind, familiar face that we've grown to be instantly comfortable with.
In regards to the other posters: no disrespect, but I would have to say that although Shelby and Tony Fly are VERY comparable as far as Minneapolis TV Icon status goes, Shelby has an edge...just because he's been doing it for a little bit longer than Tony Fly.
Actually, I'd call it a tie. Shelby and Tony Fly are both talented TV superstars that we are lucky to have in the cities.
Melinda,
Thank you very much. I am humbled by your kindness.
Don
Karla Hult on ch. 11 gets my vote. I also like Rena. She has a good sense of humor.
I take slight issue with your label "TV Star". I see them as visual journalists, not stars. I think of a TV star as someone in a sitcom or drama, in other words, a paid actor.
I don't want to think that journalists are actors. Does being on tv automatically make you an actor? It's interesting, bc it seems people line up behind their favorite journalists for exactly that reason- bc they do not seem like actors. I seem to be stuck on semantics. What we're really talking about here is star journalists who happen to be on tv.
when is tone e fly on? he sounds great.
Not sure why anyone would assume that Don Shelby has any journalistic integrity. On his radio show at 4:15 today he conducted a hard hitting interview with some local Chevrolet sales representative asking in depth questions about the auto show such as "is now a great time or the greatest time to buy a new car?" and "what kind of minivans does Chevrolet sell to carry my granchildren around?".
This is the typical problem with mainstream media. Its dependence on big advertising dollars shapes the stories it sells.
Most TV people are talking heads. Tone E. Fly gets my vote too. We need a female counterpart.
Very interesting article.
Many thanks for the share of the information.
Thanks,
Andreas
