FILM
French Crimewave Series

Is there anything hotter than French gangsters? We don't think so. Kicking off their French Crimewave series that runs through the weekend, Oak Street Cinema screens the poetic realism film the New York Times calls "one of the undeniably influential movies of the last century," Pepe Le Moko. Directed by Julien Duvivier, the film follows gangster, Pepe le Moko, as he hides out in the labyrinthine of Algier's casbah. Often seen as an early precursor to the film noir genre, it uses flashy cinematic tricks to thrill the audience and was already remade twice by the time it was ten years old. Extra: Saturday, return to Oak Street at 7:30pm to check out the Manhattan Short Film Festival showing one night only. The fest screens 10 shorts from across the globe in a screening premiering in 173 cinemas across 5 continents in 1 week! Don't forget to cast your ballot for best film and check back the following Tuesday for the results straight from headquarters. -Juleana Enright

Friday 7:30 pm, Saturday 5:15 pm, Sunday 5:15, 7:30 & 9:15 pm, Oak Street Cinema, 309 Oak Street SE, Minneapolis, general admission $8, members & students (w/ valid ID) $5
