Simone Perrin CD Release Party
We have a sneaking suspicion that people will be raving about the debut album, Hummingbird, by actress/songstress Simone Perrin after tonight's release party at the Open Eye Figure Theater. A self-described "theater artist, accordionista and chanteuse," Perrin not only has a quirkily charming stage presence, but her sweet and sassy vox and adept accordion skills bring an old-timey yet modernized flair to the table. Perrin, whose credits include A Prairie Home Companion, among many other notable theatrical gigs (as both musician and actor), will entertain this evening along with a lengthy list of talented friends and recognizable cohorts such as Prudence Johnson, Dan Chouinard, Robert Bell, Gary Schulte, The Brass Messengers, and acclaimed storyteller Kevin Kling. This is going to be one heck of a show!
7:30 p.m., Open Eye Figure Theater, 506 East 24th Street, Minneapolis, $20 (students and seniors $15), Seating is limited so reserve your tix by phone- 612-874-6338 or email at BoxOffice@openeyetheatre.org

R.E.M.: This Is Not A Show
The Sound Unseen festival hits the Cedar Cultural Center for the world premiere screening of the R.E.M. documentary, This Is Not A Show. Following the popular band on a self-imposed "experiment in terror" at the Olympia Theater in Dublin, Ireland for five nights, the
super group rehearses their new material in front of a live audience -- mistakes, fine-tuning and all. Documented by French filmmakers Vincent Moon (who is known for his work with Arcade Fire, The Shins, and The National) and Jeremiah who delve into the behind the scenes action with the band as they lay bare their experimental work for family, friends and fans.
7:30 p.m., Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Avenue S., West Bank Minneapolis, $10

Revolution Reel: Best of the Underground Film Fest
If you missed the experimental filmmaking extravaganza that was the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival last year, you're in luck! Head to Intermedia Arts this
evening for an intimate screening of the "best of" from the festival. Short films of oddball, highly visual, and often downright disturbing nature will surely abound, so lower your expectations for warm and fuzzy storytelling. From what we've seen from this fest, a lot of the work is more on the "abstract art film" tip. These shorts may inspire, or they may irritate -- depending on your tolerance of unbridled, eccentric creativity -- but we definitely approve, so get thee to Intermedia Arts tonight!
7:30 p.m., Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Avenue S., Uptown Minneapolis, $5 at the door
Wow, there are some great shows going on. I'd love to see that REM one. Too bad I'm going to be stuck at working printing thermal labels or something like that instead.
