Triple Threat Electro at the 501

MUSIC
Man Is Doomed with Military Special and NOBOT

Local electro is in the air tonight at the 501 Club, with three bands whose electronic boogie beats are guaranteed to make you shake your thang. Featuring the neo-disco electro-funk sounds of Man Is Doomed (known for their quirky live stage performances and their catchy and apropos hit,"Take Off Your Pants And Dance"), the rock party assassins of Military Special, and the technophile, button-pushing masters of NOBOT. Tonight's line-up invites you to pull up a chair -- preferably one from a technologically advanced parallel universe -- and join the digital dance revolution. -Juleana Enright

9 p.m. to 2 a.m., 501 Club, 501 Washington Ave. S., Minneapolis, 21+, No Cover

ART
Carroll/ Nedrelow/ Thompson

Despite the fact that the intimate gallery is only on its third exhibition since opening in May, Sellout's distinct vision and conceptual focus is overt and apparent on every inch of its 250 square foot art space. In tonight's opening reception, the Sellout Gallery explores the theme of "Manifest Destiny, memory and contextual distortion" as they showcase the work of photographers Eric William Carroll, Scott Nedrelow, and Lex Thompson. From Carroll's ghostly and ambiguous photograms of room interiors, to Nedrelow's morphed and enlarged text formats, and through the vacancy exposed in Thompson's photographs of zoos and amusement parks, the artists' pieces merge to push the boundaries of photography while celebrating its evocative history. Runs through July 18th.

Reception 6-9 p.m., Sellout Gallery, Northrup King Building, Suite #456, 1500 Jackson St. NE, Minneapolis, Free

Extra: Tonight is also First Thursdays in the Art District so studios will be open throughout Northrup King as well as in surrounding buildings. For more info visit www.nemaa.org!

SPECIAL EVENT
Walker Free Thursdays

Spending a random evening wandering the Walker Art Center and/or Sculpture Garden is something everyone should do at least once per season, if you ask us. And the Walker definitely makes it easy: every Thursday night enjoy free admission to the museum, arty activities, and fantastic performances. This week, check out the Fifth Annual Quest for the Voice of Youth Poetry Showcase in the McGuire Theater, featuring young poets El Guante, and Khary Jackson (6 is 9), and Chantz Erolin. In the Sky Pesher installation you'll be privy to the sassy sounds of the Mandrágora Tango Orchestra starting at 8:30 -- but we recommend you show up at 7:30 for free tango lessons (we don't want you embarrassing yourself after all)! A recession-proof evening that will surely impress your date!

5 p.m. free admission begins, 7 p.m. Voice of Youth, 7:30 p.m. bar opens/tango lessons, 8:30 p.m. live music in the Sky Pesher, 10 p.m. bar closes, Walker Art Center, 1750 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, Free
