Secrets of the Day For July 24, 2009

Michael Cina's 'Ways of Seeing' opens at First Amendment Gallery

SPECIAL EVENT
Artery 24

24 straight hours of artistic oddity await you this weekend at the Soap Factory! For the second year in a row, the sprawling art space hosts Artery 24, a round-the-clock performance art showcase featuring some of the cities' most innovative emerging artists. Each nook and cranny of the huge gallery may just hold a spectacle of artistic expression at any given moment. From dance to theater, from installation art to the undefinable, a pop-in to Artery 24 this weekend will be far from dull, no matter the hour. We expect things will get quite interesting come 2 a.m., when the patrons may be just as animated as the performers.

Friday 6 p.m. through Saturday 6 p.m., Soap Factory, 518 2nd Street SE, Minneapolis, Free

THEATER
McWop & Kraut (and Dude Weather!)

For two Fridays only, audiences will be treated to the wild witticisms of sketch comedy troupe McWop & Kraut. Among hilarious sketches and light-hearted barbs aimed at history, religion, and good taste, you'll also be privy to a LIVE episode of Secrets of the City's very own Dude Weather! Yes it's true -- you can see the smoking, swearing meteorologist live in action, along with a few of his funniest friends. This fun showcase only runs this Friday and next, so hop to it and snap up your tickets before Dude's fanclub catches wind!

Friday, 10:30 p.m. (also Friday July 31st), Brave New Workshop, 2605 Hennepin Avenue S., Minneapolis, $10

ART
Ways of Seeing

This weekend, First Amendment Arts presents a solo exhibit of abstract work by famed graphic designer and YouWorkForThem proprietor, Michael Cina. But take heed, design junkies, and make no assumption about the content; Cina will be displaying not works of digital origin, but original paintings, done the good old fashioned way. Over 150 works on paper and canvas will transform First Amendment's hip basement studio into a vivid landscape of blooming, layered abstract patterns that are at the same time visceral and ethereal. What's more, the work is priced to sell, starting at just $20. So, head Northeast this evening and return home with some amazing original artwork that is already worth much more than you paid for it.

Saturday, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., First Amendment Arts, 1101 Stinson Blvd, Northeast Minneapolis, Free

SPECIAL EVENT
You are South

Happy Birthday to Art of This Gallery! This inventive, contemporary non-profit art space has been alive and kickin' for 4 whole years. Celebrate art on the southside of Minneapolis with a b.y.o.bbq party and potluck, a front yard earth work/yard sale (what this means, we're not altogether sure, but it sounds neat), plus performance, sound and video work from the mind of artist David Petersen. To top it all off, Adrian Freeman has turned AOT's basement into a fully functional karaoke lounge. Head South and pay your respects to this hardworking crew of arts instigators!

Saturday, 6 p.m., Art of This Gallery, 3506 Nicollet Avenue, Minneapolis, $5 donation
