Inside the Emperor's Closet: Valentino documentary opens at the Oak Street Cinema, max's

FILM
Valentino: The Last Emperor

Whether you're a fashion fiend or a regular joe, you've likely heard the name "Valentino." The iconic designer retired in 2007, but not before allowing Vanity Fair correspondent Matt Tyrnauer to document his life on film -- a project that spanned almost two years and captured over 250 hours worth of footage. The documentary flick, Valentino: The Last Emperor, follows Valentino Garavani around the world with his long-time lover and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti and their fleet of pampered Pug dogs. An inspiring foray into the nuts and bolts of Valentino's empire, the film offers a peek into the glamorous and often comical personal lives of the two men. Packed with plenty of juicy tidbits that will surely leave the style-obsessed masses starry-eyed and giddy, Valentino: The Last Emperor is a tale of decadence, beauty and artistic passion. The chemistry between Garavani and Giammetti is priceless; a classic clash of grand creative vision versus logic and business sense that plays out with sarcasm, brutal honesty, and touching sentiment. From design concepting sessions to the production of his extravagant 45th anniversary show (which was also his last), the film is a marvelous tour and moving tribute to this brilliant artist's career. We suggest wearing red (Valentino's signature color), but feel free to leave the bright orange tan at home. Runs through June 25th.

Nightly at 7:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. with Sat-Sun matinees at 5:15 p.m., Oak Street Cinema, 309 Oak Street SE, Minneapolis, $8, $6 Seniors, $5 students w/ ID

FASHION
Jamie Cassavoy Trunk Show

We're in love with the girlishly contemporary designs of jewelry maven Jamie Cassavoy! Delicate flowers made of softly hued, distressed metals embellished with pearls and other assorted baubles dominate the large collection of necklaces, rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings. Cassavoy's designs are edgy and original enough to separate themselves from the whole "gaudy oversized flower" trend, while still maintaining a romantic whimsy tinged with modern elegance. Head to darling St. Louis Park boutique, Max's, this weekend for an exclusive trunk show featuring a wide selection of Cassavoy's designs, and pick up that perfect summer accessory for yourself or your lady-friend!

Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Max's, 3831 Grand Way, St. Louis Park, Free

MUSIC
How Was the Show 7th Anniversary

If you're at all in-tune with the local music scene, you probably have howwastheshow.com bookmarked. This fantastic resource for all things music-related has been the go-to for Twin Cities scenesters for seven years now -- and in the words of founder David De Young, "In Internet years, 7 is a long time!" Head to the Turf Club this evening to give kudos to the minds behind the popular site, which features live music and theater reviews, photos, an events calendar and a podcast. Tonight's sweet lineup of HWTS faves includes local jazz-rock instrumentalists Big Trouble, vocalist Aby Wolf, garage rockers Communist Daughter, and indie popsters The Inwood Radio.

Friday, 9 p.m., Turf Club, 1601 University Avenue, St. Paul, $6

ART
Open Door

Tonight Rosalux Gallery strays from its members-only exhibition policy to host Open Door, a juried show featuring dozens of up and coming local artists. Now in its fifth year, the exhibit is a colorful sampling of Twin Cities fine art at its..um, finest. Peruse three levels of vivid work, enjoy refreshments, and of course, the kind of eccentric banter that you can only find at an art opening. Featuring artists Jesse Draxler, Garrett Perry, Chad Rutter, Laura Stack, Susan Wagner Ginter and so many more that it would be quite annoying of us to list them all here! Runs through June 28th.

Saturday, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Rosalux Gallery, 1011 Washington Avenue S. (Open Book Complex), Downtown Minneapolis, Free
