DANCE
9 x 22 Dance Lab
The Bryant Lake Bowl's 9 foot x 22 foot performance stage has seen its share of extravagant acts, from improv and fringe fest shows, to comedy theater and inventive dance. Tonight, the stage's boundaries will be tested yet again with a new performance from a dance troupe so devoted to the modest dimensions of the BLB stage they named their company 9x22 Dance Lab. Since its conception in 2003, we've marveled at the work of over 160 choreographers and hundreds of dancers. Host, producer and curator, Laurie Van Wieren, brings together a night of contemporary and traditional West African dance with performers Deja Stowers, Jasmine Harris, Yonci Jameson, Kinyari Al-Ahad, Selima Al-Ahad, Yetunde Whittaker, Ashley Akpaka, and live music by Voice of Culture Drummers. The evening also presents an Erin Drummond performance, "Otherwake," with dancers Mandy Herrick, Nicole Curry, Stephanie Blackmon Woodbeck and Kristin Howe; and a short dance piece from visual and multi-media collaborative artists, Mary Esch, Krista Kelley Walsh and Josie Winship. After each piece, the dancers and choreographers will be on hand to discuss their work, moderated by Van Weiren. Don't miss this chance to explore unfettered dance work and offer your two cents. Purchase tickets HERE.
8 p.m. - 11 p.m., Bryant Lake Bowl Theater, 810 West Lake St., Minneapolis, $6-10 (pay what you can)
Described as a "new event for curious people," the clever conceptors at Solutions Twin Cities bring you "Give and Take." The event features short presentations by
numerous local "experts", fueling conversation and finding common bond. No specific theme is set for the evening, and topics may include, but are not limited to: public art, boat building, industrial design, books, feelings, documentary photography, and even the "monkey man of India" and how one might track him. Weird? Yes. Cool? We think so. Either way, you'll probably learn a thing or two, meet a few interesting folks, and possibly even stir up a storm of creativity!
7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Avenue, Minneapolis, $3-$5 suggested donation
FILM
Volatic: The Volta Tour Live in Paris and Reykjavik
Head to south Minneapolis' "microcinema" the Trylon for an intimate showing of Bjork's Voltaic: The Volta Tour Live In Paris And Reykjavik.
Presented by the film/music connoisseurs at Sound Unseen and Take Up Productions, this live concert video contains highlights from Bjork's Volta tour, featuring songs from the Volta album as well as fan faves such as Hunter, Joga, Army of Me, and Hyperballad. Never one to scrimp on production value, Bjork and director Russell Thomas create a visual and sonic masterpiece that goes above and beyond the typical "concert video." With a cast of talented musicians including Sonic Youth collaborator Chris Corsano on percussion and Bjork's all-female Icelandic 10-piece brass band, as well as stunning visuals -- the Volta tour was a marvel to behold. We recommend getting your tickets online as the Trylon is a small space with limited seating, and the 7:30 screening has already sold out. Viva Bjork!
9:30 p.m., Trylon Microcinema, 3258 Minnehaha Avenue S, Minneapolis, $8, tickets online HERE.
