The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide To Capitalism And Socialism With A Key To The Scriptures
The third jewel in the crown of The Guthrie's celebration of all things Kushner is definitely a mouthful...and an earful and an eyeful. The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide To Capitalism And Socialism With A Key To The Scriptures is a clever, relatable and intense production that centers around an American family dealing with their patriarch (played by filmmaker, actor and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Michael Cristofer), whose zeal for life has dwindled increasingly since his retirement. After a botched suicide attempt, the adult children gather at the family home in Brooklyn to talk their father out of another, more calculated plan, bringing with them an interesting lineup of characters, a spectrum of ideals, and an unusual take on the concept of the family unit. Written by man-of-the-month Tony Kushner, and directed by Michael Greif, this play brings together top notch Guthrie production value with an amazing set and a wonderfully cast group of actors. Though the play clocks in at a about 3 1/2 hours -- rather long for a typical Guthrie production -- the rapid-fire dialogue and engaging characters will definitely keep you from nodding off in the theater. Not to mention, there's strong language, sexual situations, smoking and nudity -- and who can argue with that?
7:30 p.m. tonight, days and times vary through June 28th, Guthrie Theater, 818 2nd Avenue S, Downtown Minneapolis, $29-$60

Tonight, enjoy the snappy rock n' roll sensibilities of local up and comers, Military Special, and the smooth stylings of DJ Anton. Indulge in $3 taps and wines or $4 cocktails, then fill up on chef's choice appetizer specials that may include such delectables as fried goat cheese ravioli, corn dogs, or fried fish bites -- yum!
