Chris Larson and Stewart Turnquist Go Deeper North at the Burnet Gallery

BENEFIT EVENT
Franconia Benefit/Chris Larson Artist Talk

Make your way to the Chamber's Burnet Gallery this evening for an informative and engaging art event benefiting Franconia Sculpture Park. One of this year's mega-buzzed about artists, Chris Larson will be on hand to discuss his current exhibit at the Burnet Gallery, Deep North. A past exhibitor and advisory board member at Franconia, Larson's ties to the famed Sculpture Park spans 13 years. Leading this lively discussion is Stewart Turnquist, the much-loved former director of the MIA's Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program, whose resignation last year caused a major uproar in the arts community. Turnquist and Larson will chat about the exhibit, and will also rally for the 20 acre sculpture park that exhibits a rotating collection of over 75 contemporary sculptures on its grounds. Complimentary Hors d'oevres and cash bar round out this evening of spectacular art and conversation.

5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Burnet Art Gallery, Chambers Hotel, 901 Hennepin Avenue, Downtown Minneapolis, Free (donations encouraged to benefit Franconia Sculpture Park)

FILM
RIP: A Remix Manifesto

Tonight, the award winning film, RIP: A Remix Manifesto -- screened at high profile festivals SXSW and IFDA -- comes to Minneapolis via the music/film junkies at Sound Unseen. From the controversy over who owns the rights to the iconic Obama "Hope" poster series to musician sampling, the debate over inspiration vs. copy appears to be the topic du jour. In RIP, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores the issue of copyright in the information age and the thin boundary between users and producers. The film centers around protagonist, Girl Talk, a mash-up DJ known for his chart-topping sample-based tracks, and asks "is Girl Talk a paragon of people power, or the Pied Piper of piracy?" The film also implores the opinions of Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig; Brazil's Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil; and pop culture critic, Cory Doctorow. Tickets are limited, so get yours here.

8 p.m., The Trylon Screening Room, 2820 E. 33rd St. Minneapolis, $5
