Perpich Center Parties Arty at the Cedar

SPECIAL EVENT
Celebrate Perpich Arts!

We've known many a talented teen whose skills have been honed and artistic passions inspired by the workings of the Perpich Center for Arts Education (PCAE). The Arts High School is one of the state's most unique resources for arts education, schooling hundreds of creatively inclined teens each year; and the PCAE's agency works tirelessly to promote innovative public education centered in the arts locally, and nation-wide. Tonight's showcase spotlights Perpich's best and brightest, with students, alums and faculty performing and presenting all evening long. You'll be treated to live music from the likes of More than Lights, Alexei Casselle, Best Friends Forever, and I Colossus, plus spoken word, dance, and much more. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Support and celebrate this phenomenal and oh-so-important institution in their effort to raise public awareness during this disturbing time of rampant arts budget cuts and economic downturn.

7 p.m. to Midnight, Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Avenue S., West Bank Minneapolis, Free (donations welcome)

MUSIC
Lookbook

If you've yet to jump on the Lookbook bandwagon, we suggest you hop to it! This darling duo is currently all the rage in the local music scene, with a "Best New Band" nod from City Pages' recent "Best of" issue to prove it. Maggie Morrison and Grant Cutler construct sleek, ethereal arrangements that balance perfectly Morrison's velveteen vocals and Cutler's moody electronic musings. Uplifting, entrancing, and utterly addicting, Lookbook is pure sonic decadence. Tonight's show at the Turf provides a stellar supporting lineup that includes Ghost Band, Radar Threat, and Overthruster.

9 p.m., Turf Club, 1601 University Avenue, St. Paul, $4

FILM
I am Trying to Break Your Heart

Make the trek to Northeast Minneapolis tonight for an intimate screening of Sam Jones' 2002 documentary I am Trying to Break Your Heart, a film based on the making of Wilco's fourth studio album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Following the critically acclaimed band on a tumultuous journey of creative differences and studio disputes, Jones' film puts in perspective the complications of commercial success. Tonight's screening will be held in the Casket Cinema and will feature a "special to-be-announced musical guest" as part of the q&a after the film. What's better? You can BYOB!

7:30 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. screening, Casket Cinema at the Casket Arts Building, Studio 145, 681 17th Avenue NE, Minneapolis, (enter through the loading dock door under the big red arrow), $5 donation
