Beyond Borders Film Festival
Each year, the Beyond Borders Film Festival, presented by the non-profit Rimé Foundation, uses the sensory pleasing medium of cinematography as a reminder, both local and universally, of the rich, cultural diversity of our world. Through film screenings and multi-cultural performances, the events during the Beyond Borders Festival enrich the bond between human creativity and inspire awareness and local involvement cross-culturally. This year, the festival features the Academy Award-nominated film, Revanche, and a film from nationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker (and recent Oprah guest) Jenny Phillips. Tonight's opening festivities kick off with two films from the Native Voices Program followed by a talk with local environmental activist, Winona LaDuke and a drumming performance by Midnite Express. Visit the Beyond Borders Film Festival website for a full schedule of the week's events.

SPECIAL EVENT
In the Barbers Chair
One of the most well-known operas, The Barber of Seville, will appear at the Ordway next month. Join the Minnesota Opera this evening for an exclusive sneak peek, with
Resident Artist John Boehr singing the famous aria "Largo al factotum," (you know the one: Figaro, Figaro, Figaro!) as well as a brief, but in-depth discussion led by musicologist Daniel Freeman on Rossini's 19th century comic opera. Tonight's event is hosted by Tempo, the Opera's young professionals group, and features cocktails and appetizers prior to the discussion. A great way for newcomers to introduce themselves to the opera without committing to an entire performance, and a fun way to meet like-minded artsy types as well!
6:30 p.m., Minnesota Opera Center, 620 N. 1st Street, Minneapolis, $5 Tempo Members, $10 non-members, Register HERE
The second installment of Scion's Fashion Feud pits local designers Kimberly Jurek and Jenny Carle against each other in a timed battle of
artistic ingenuity. Armed with nothing but a bag of raw textiles, scissors, needles, thread, and a small selection of accessories, the designers will have one hour to create a stunning outfit for their model, which is then voted upon by the audience. Watching someone sew for an hour is probably not the most exciting thing in the world, so there will be plenty of cocktails on hand to keep the party rockin' and enough interesting people in stylish garb to keep your eyes poppin'.
