New Year's Day, Auntie Mame Style

FILM
Auntie Mame

Some of us at Secrets of the City aspire to be just like Auntie Mame when we grow up. Provided of course that writing snappy event blurbs starts paying a lot more, or we get a rich husband who caters to our eccentricities (not likely). This fun 1958 film follows Patrick Dennis, a young boy who lives with his free-spirited Aunt (Rosalind Russell) after his father dies. After being shipped off to a boarding school by his father's meddling executor, Patrick eventually grows up and Mame attempts to rescue him from the conventional life that he seems set on having. Presented by Jazz88fm, this special edition of the Reel Jazz Film Series is a can't-miss!

7:30 p.m., The Heights Theater, 3951 Central Avenue NE, Columbia Heights, $10 (includes popcorn and drink) Reserve tickets at 612-668-1744

SPECIAL EVENT
The Pleasure of Your Call is Requested

Alexander Ramsey wrote in his journal, on Jan. 1, 1875: "Day was pleasant and wife had about 100 callers." Back in the olden days, it was proper social etiquette to "come-a-calling" on special occasions such as New Year's Day. These brief, formal visits were a typical social grace in the Victorian age, and thanks to the charming nostalgia of the Alexander Ramsey house you can take part as well. Make a "call" to this historical mansion today, and experience the holiday decadence of a bygone era with costumed tours, refreshments and more.

Noon to 3 p.m., Alexander Ramsey House, 265 S. Exchange Street, St. Paul, $9 Adults, $7 Seniors, $6 Children age 6-17, $3 Children 5 and under.

WINE & DINE
New Year's Day Champagne Brunch

Not that you necessarily need more Champagne after last night, but when paired with one of the best brunch buffets in the city, who can argue, really? Hit up legendary Northeast staple, Jax Cafe, for their magical hangover-curing New Year's Day feast featuring such fare as shrimp cocktail, egg strata, fresh baked caramel rolls, waffles, omlettes, meats, cheeses, salads, and a vast array of other delectables. Enjoy the classic ambiance of this Twin Cities landmark, and eat to your heart's content. Any healthy new year's resolutions can officially commence after brunch.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last seating at 1:30 p.m.), Jax Cafe, 1928 University Avenue NE, Northeast Minneapolis, $29.95

Extra: Barbette will have their full brunch menu, and The Red Stag will serve lunch with a few brunch-inspired items to please your palate.

SPECIAL EVENT
Hangover Party

Warning: This event is not for the faint of heart! If you're one those who believes that the "hair of the dog" is a clever solution to a hangover, than this is the party for you. Head Northeast tonight for a booze-fueled, post-New Year's Eve throw down at the 331 Club. DJ TRL (The talented Tom Loftus of Modern Radio) will spin his stellar selection to ease your blown out ears and the 331's sassy bartenders will pump you full of ruckus juice. Lets just hope you don't have to work on Friday!

10 p.m., 331 Club, 331 13th Avenue NE, Northeast Minneapolis, Free
