Barbara Morrison Heats Up The Dakota

MUSIC
Barbara Morrison

The Dakota knows how to take the chill right out of your bones with their ever-smokin' line up of amazing musicians. Tonight experience the sultry and swingin' sounds of the much-celebrated Barbara Morrison. A storyteller at heart, Morrison's sharp wit, grace, and charm have mesmerized audiences far and wide, garnering comparisons to such jazz and blues greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan. At the Dakota for a smoldering two-night engagement with two performances each night, you'll have four solid reasons to make the trek downtown.

7 p.m. & 9:30 p.m. Monday & Tuesday, Dakota Jazz Club, 1010 Nicollet, Downtown Minneapolis, $16-$28

FILM
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

The cool cats at Take Up Productions continue to indulge their film noir fetish at the Parkway Theater. This time, they serve up the 2005 flick Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. Narrated by small-time crook Harry Lockhart (Downey) who accidentally lands himself a part in a Hollywood film, thanks to a botched robbery. Once in Los Angeles, Lockhart discovers evidence of a complicated murder-mystery, and teams up with his childhood dream girl and a private investigator to solve the crime.

SPECIAL EVENT
Soap Boxing

The Myspace page for Soap Boxing describes the event as "where poetry collides with sport and entertainment," and that sounds about right. This monthly poetry slam is competitive, fast paced, and definitely entertaining enough to hold your undivided attention. Listen in on three rounds of poetic battling between some of the Twin Cities' most outspoken scribes while sipping a cocktail in the cool, cool ambiance of the Artists' Quarter. Tonight's edition will feature spoken word heroines Sierra DeMulder and Jenn Smileyface who will battle it out to win a spot in the Women of the World Poetry Slam Showdown in Detroit later this year.

8 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), The Artists' Quarter, 408 St. Peter Street, Downtown St. Paul, $5

Help! Did anyone catch the KSTP weather babe on either New Year's Eve or New Year's Day (can't remember which). I'm 99% sure it wasn't Chikage Windler...the only female that KSTP lists on their weather team. Any help? She was a stunning brunette.
