Tolerance: The Art of Chris Mars Book Signing
Chris Mars doesn't talk much about his days as a rock star anymore. The former drummer of the Replacements has waded through the waters and re-emerged as one of the most powerful surrealist artists today. But trying to get Mars on the record about his work is just as hard as getting him to reminisce about his life as an alt rocker. One reason is because he has so many projects going on at one time: he's his own publisher, releasing his new book, Tolerance: The Art of Chris Mars (Book signing tonight at Magers and Quinn); exhibitions at Billy Shire Fine Arts; and still making music on the side. But Mars is reluctant to give interviews - perhaps because of the power of words. He's watched how they've been used when applied to his mentally ill brother, and uses his artwork to de-politicize social stigmas. Mars' work could be considered frightening or monstrous at face value, but it could be because you might already know the monsters. According to Mars, they're all around you. -Robyne Robinson

MUSIC
Big John Bates & the Voodoo Dollz
Rockabilly is alive and well in Vancouver, and Big John Bates & The Voodoo Dolls definitely make that clear. This garage-rockin' gang of Canadian cool cats slide into Lee's
Liquor Lounge tonight for one of their signature outrageous performances. Expect scantily clad rockabilly babes, rampant brown liquor guzzling, and possibly even a little bit of fire breathing. And the music isn't half bad either; a dark, guitar-driven, Cramps-esque sound that may inspire bottle breaking and/or dancing - this is one Tuesday night you'll probably regret the next day, in a good way of course! Local rockabilly faves Hot Rod Hearse kick things off the right way.
9 p.m., Lee's Liquor Lounge, 101 Glenwood, Minneapolis, $5
SPECIAL EVENT
Triple Double: Triple Rock 10 Year Anniversary Edition
Triple Rock Tuesdays will go down in Twin Cities' history as one of the rowdiest happy hours in town. The long-running late night 2-4-1 party has,
as of late, been spiced up with the addition of live DJs (as opposed to hearing "F$%k the Police" on jukebox repeat as in years past). Get a taste of Minneapolis counter-culture at its coolest with a drink swilling cast of punkers, rockers, and neon bandana-wearing hipsters, tattoo covered kids, and West Bank weirdos at this free-wheelin' evening of debauchery. What's more, the Triple Rock is celebrating its 10-year Anniversary this month, so the atmosphere ought to be that much more festive. Tonight enjoy DJ sets by The Millionth Word, DJ Buck K.A.C., and Winship.
9 p.m. to 2 a.m. (2-4-1s from 9 p.m. to Midnight) Triple Rock Social Club, 629 Cedar Avenue, West Bank Minneapolis, Free
