Secrets of the Day For December 24, 2008

It's a Jewbilee!

SPECIAL EVENT
Jewbilee 2008

This annual tradition at Grumpy's has become the destination of choice for not only cool kids of the Jewish variety, but also multi/anti-denominational hipsters looking to escape their prospective family fiascos on Christmas Eve. Cool your holiday jets with party-starters Mike the 2600 King and MC/VL, with a little karaoke on the side, hosted by DJ Joel Stitzel. Win sweet prizes in the Hanukkah gift raffle, stuff yourself with free Chinese food, spin a few dreidels, and party it up with supporting organizations Jewish Community Action and Indie Jews.

9 p.m., Grumpy's Downtown, 1111 Washington Avenue. S, Minneapolis, Free

SPECIAL EVENT
331 Club's Annual Shitty Gift Exchange

For the past few years the 331 Club has been a hub for the exchange of the most terrible gifts money can buy. Bring that hideous sweater vest, book about pioneers, or granny-scented Avon lotion down to this Northeast hot spot and hand it over to the bartender to trade out for something equally crappy. Who knows? You might get lucky; one man's trash is another man's treasure, as they say. Stick around for the 331's signature $2.50 drink specials as well as holiday sarcasm and camaraderie. This event also happens on Christmas Day.

3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Wednesday, 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday, 331 Club, 331 13th Avenue NE, Northeast Minneapolis, Free

SPECIAL EVENT
XX-Mas Eve Extravaganza

While most downtown clubs will opt for closed doors this Christmas Eve, the Lounge will spread holiday cheer of the most danceable variety. Brave the chill and whoop it up with the club set this evening; featuring a mashup of Top 40, Hip Hop, House, and international beats to help you dance off those impending Christmas day calories. Sip $4 Bacardi eggnogs and boozy apple cider drinks and snack on a smattering of complimentary holiday treats. Claiming "more drinks than even a rosy-nosed Santa could consume in a night," the Lounge seems dead set on making your Christmas day a hung-over one.

9 p.m., The Lounge, 411 Second Avenue N., Downtown Minneapolis, Cost n/a

I'm kind of sad the Jewbilee has moved from the 331. Grumpy's Downtown doesn't have nearly the appeal. But it's still a great event. They uphold the Jewish tradition of Chinese takeout for Christmas in grand fashion.
