As the 2008 session draws to a close with no small amount of pomp and ceremony today, it is a time to reflect upon the marvel that is the modern democratic process. More particularly, it is a time to think about the countless hordes of people at the Capitol who toil every day to grease the cogs in the great machine that is our state government, their pleated khaki pants and skirts billowing softly in the gentle breeze coming in off the Mississippi. For it is not just the Sex Hog who deserves recognition. All who emerge dripping with sweat into the sunlight after months of drafting bills and desperately searching for common ground - even if that common ground consists simply of looking across the aisle gazing longingly at a particularly striking member of the opposition party.
So today, to recognize the profound brilliance, and hotness, that is our public servants at the Capitol, marks the launch of The Defenestrator's first annual "Most Beautiful People at the Capitol". The award recognizes the beauty and brains of all those who will emerge today on the Capitol steps, hungry for the alcohol and thousands of hours of comp time that is their due. And the top 10 most beautiful people at the Capitol, five men and five women, will receive a fabulous prize package and a photo shoot to be featured here, on The Rake. But to find those souls most deserving of this award, we need your help.
Yes, it's up to you to help determine who the top 10 most beautiful people at the Capitol are. So if a legislative assistant caught your eye from across the aisle, if a fetching intern's work on health care reform dazzled you in its brilliance, if you were stopped in your tracks by a strapping researcher with rippling triceps balancing a daunting stack of books that rivaled any of Hercules' 12 labors, or even if the dizzying smile of a Capitol police officer brought to mind fantasies of being "taken in" for petty larceny, let us know in the comments below (yes, we take anonymous comments) or send us an email at goldsmith@rakemag.com. Simply let us know who at the Capitol, from legislators to interns and lobbyists, fits the bill by Friday, May 30, and we'll tally the votes.
So before you run off to The Liffey to cope with the shock of effective legislative compromise, take a moment to nominate a colleague who toils in obscurity despite their obvious beauty and brains. Nick Busse
There seems to be a pattern developing here.
While reporting on a transportation committe meeting, I noticed the intellect, articulateness and, of course, good looks of the lean, dark-haired and lawyer-esque Judd Schetnan, government affairs director for the Metropolitan Council. He looks a little like Will from the Will and Grace show. He was very helpful and professional when I had to obtain more information from him for my news story. My interest was peaked enough that I later Googled him. Alas, I discovered he was already taken. Upon closer examination of the photo, the ring on his finger confirmed this.
I nominate Pam Steinle, the Asian beauty who writes for Politics in Minnesota. Besides being a wonderfully outgoing and social young woman, Steinle was raised on a farm and has an amazing work ethic. In her 20s, she is raising two foster children with her husband, is active in church and drives 65 miles each way to her job in St. Paul. She has also now been accepted into law school.
Besides being tall, dark and handsome, Session Daily reporter Nick Busse is a great writer who has contributed great trend pieces to the publication and is pumping up Session Daily's online resources for interested citizens.Busse also deservces recognization because he's been putting in incredible hours this session and still manages to cut a good figure in a suit and and have perfect hair.
I also nominate Nick Busse. He's essentially the twenty-something's answer to Jackie Kennedy, were she a powerful writer and better looking.

Let's not forget the hunk of glory that is Peter Brickwedde. Have you ever looked into his beautiful eyes, those deep pools of lovin'? Be careful or you might drown in them!
The Brick (Peter Brickwedde) is the pinnacle of masculinity. You know the intro to Anchorman: "Suits so fine he makes Sinatra look like a hobo." and "A voice that could make a wolverine purr"? They just took that from the dictionary definition of "Peter Brickwedde."
Governor Pawlenty recently maligned the lack of sex in his relationship with his wife. Why? Once Peter Brickwedde showed up at the capitol she would have no other. He's that sexy.

Speaking of the governor and his sex life, we can't forget to nominate Mary Pawlenty. She is quite a foxy lady and a very sweet and intelligent one to boot. Plus she deserves some recognition for all the barbs she must put up with from her husband. The sex life comment hasn't been his only one. He likes to poke fun at his wife and make her blush when they appear together. When Pawlenty was in Scott County for the swearing-in of a new judge, he quirped that he knows something about judges because he used to sleep with one.

Peter Brickwedde is the Infinite Jest of Capitol hotness. I saw him there once and have since lost all interest in everything but trying to catch a glimpse of him again.
Wow ... Well, not that it isn't flattering, we all know that this smoke screen of mistaken identity has me confused with my office neighbor Charlie Vander Aarde, who is truly the head turner around the Capitol. I urge all you posters to stop playing political games and come clean, lest this nomination go straight to Vetoland.

Laura "Lady" Brod. The only thing sharper than Lady Brod's monochromatic suits is her intellect. I sit across the aisle, but no one makes it hurt quite so good as Lady Brod. She can definitely ask me to yield.

The reason I ask about the freaky side is that I hear Brod has a 'too good to be true' or 'angelic' quality to her with no baggage. However, now that I think about it ... maybe this angelic summa cum laude grad (her website) is just as exciting as one with a freaky side!! Maybe this girl next door GOP wonder woman should be shown reading a book or at the committee table trying to pass legislation in a string bikini rather than drinking milk as has been previously suggested.
