John Hines Out at KTLK

John Hines' 17 year-run with Clear Channel and what Clear Channel was before it was Clear Channel ended this morning -- a Monday, go figure -- when he was told he was being removed from his morning job at KTLK (100.3-FM). Hines was a standard at Clear Channel's country music K102 until this past March when he shifted over -- by his choice -- to add a little mainstream professional sheen to ratings-deprived KTLK, an all right-wing talk station.

Hines shrugged off the move when reached by phone around noon today. "It's a part of the business. I accept that. They said we're going in a different direction, and I get that."

He said his six-month non-compete and six-month severance will tie him over, and until then he will happily entertain offers from other stations in the market. The most obvious of those being KSTP AM 1500, where rumors are swirling about their interest in KFAN's Dan Barreiro -- most likely for afternoon drive, were Barreiro to leave Clear Channel, and were Joe Soucheray agree to earlier tee-times -- and where the usual, often clueless "experts" believe KSTP could use help in mornings.

AM-1500's program director, Steve Konrad, hadn't heard about the Hines move when I called. "Hines? Really?" Konrad avoided any direct mention of Barreiro other than to state the obvious. "He's a talent". On any possible interest in Hines, he said, "A well known, popular host? You always have to be open to someone like that."

We are awaiting a response to our call to Hines' boss, Steve Versnick.

The first question to him being, "What new direction?" KTLK was originally pitched as a 21st century version of WCCO. Almost immediately it took an entirely familiar, hard right-wing turn and has stayed there despite consistently disappointing ratings.

The hiring of Hines suggested to some that the station, then supervised by regional boss, Mick Anselmo, was beginning an evolution into something more mainstream. Another rumor floating in the wind last week was that Anselmo's replacement, Mike Crusham, had decided the time had finally come to "blow up" the struggling FM talk experiment, supposedly to go in that more WCCO-like direction, with bona fide news.

The problem there being that bona fide news would require bona fide reporters out on bona fide streets, something Clear Channel has been unwilling to do until now and, with the entire 1200-station company about to return to private ownership, it seems even less likely to bother with in the future. (Reporters cost money, and separating themselves from Hines' hefty salary -- likely in the $250K range -- is an early example of 5% to 8% expense cutting expected across the Clear Channel empire.)

More likely -- another bit of gabble on the grapevine -- is moving comparatively cheap Dan Conry into morning drive and dropping yet another (cheap) syndicated act, Glenn Beck, etc, into the 8 to 11 slot.

What a pathetic way for Clear Channel to end the career for a local icon like Hines. Hines is a great guy and has always been friendly when I've seen him. That said, Hines was a mismatch for the morning show on KTLK. I couldn't listen to him, he works best in a music format. What made Hines funny on music radio (bumbling and stumbling) hurt him in a talk format. KTLK is now angling at a stronger news format? Have they seen WCCOs latest book? Pure news on the radio is a dying format -- hello Internet!

Clear Channel strikes again in typical fashion. In addition to John Hines, two other veteran CC employees were also let go. Jason Nagel and Dan Culhane from Cities 97 were the other two to get the "downsizing" memo. Soon all we'll get to listen to on any Clear Channel station will be screaming 20 year olds who can't even pronounce Barak Obama correctly. John Hines, Jason Nagel and Dan Culhane all deserved better than they got. Long live The Current and satellite radio.

Clear Channel may very well be clearing the books in order to keep Dan Barreiro. Everyone expects draconian cuts once the Bain Capital deal goes through, but they can't afford to let Barreiro jump across town. Leverage is sweet. But in this case its like the tube that oozes out the other end when you squeeze the top. (I'm not sure even I follow that one.)

Hines and Bob Berglund (already at KSTP) would be the reuion of record for a whole generation. And for Barrerio: Confirmed by many a few years back that then-KSTP AM Program Director Joe O'Brien, in one of his first moves, nearly landed Barrerio to the big 1500 until GM Todd Fisher royally screwed it up with a classic gaf in a meeting at a public restaurant that left Barrerio, O'Brien, and others in attendance utterly agagst and speechless. Think how fortunes might have turned had KSTP had Dan B. on board over the past 6 years, back to back with Soucheray. Fisher f****d it up for all involved. Now, Hines and Bergy, Souch, Mischke, Barrerio, Reusse, Souhan? Say goodbye to angry white men, say hello to some fun and serious humor. Now we're talkin'.

Eh-hem: "Confirmed by many a few years back ..." Oft-repeated yet rarely attributed. What happened causing "utterly agagst and speechless"? Did Fisher stand up and piss in somebody's salad? The story always assumes the presence of the same three, maybe four guys. Who has the agenda? It would be fun to have a single radio station full of those personalities. Makes sense it would be on the one owned by hometown family, too. Hope that comes to be.

Barreiro would be the key to turning AM 1500 around. But Dan's an afternoon drive guy, and right now that's where Joe is, and moving anywhere else to accommodate Barreiro would be acknowledging that he was no longer the top dog. The Hubbards could pay Joe a ton of dough to paper over the blow to his ego, but that starts adding up to some fairly serious overhead for a station that isn't THAT hot an item. On the other hand, if Barreiro could be convinced to take a shot at mornings ... but that defeats the purpose of a sports-heavy guy leading into the Twins games.

RE: The Fisher-Barreiro lunch. That is an oft-told tale. I have no way of knowing how much is urban legend. Well, actually I do, and I'd assess it at 80% accurate.

Don't get me started on the "appeal" of the angry white guy shtick. Having seen this beast from the inside, what strikes me as most implausible is the notion that it somehow appeals to a "high-end demographic", like your average fat cat Republican CEO actually spends time listening to some nitwit denounce evolution.

Sorry, kids. The changeover to this new system has come with the to-be-expected glitches. Under the old system I got an e-mail anytime one of you commented, and I could fire off a response ASAP. Now, I gotta remember to scroll through this stuff and jab at them that needs jabbing. Supposedly a patch is in the works. Bear with us.

"It would be fun to have a single radio station full of those personalities." WAY too much sports stuff. We already have a sports station in KFAN. Enough with middle-aged white men droning on about young men's games. Stay grown-up, KSTP.

Speaking of radio changes, what the heck is happening over at 107.1, Brian? Lots of changes, the shows are actually taking phone calls, and they even had Neil Justin sitting in for three hours the other day. (Which was like listening to paint dry, but that's another story).

There are two new shows, basically. Colleen Kruse survived the Andrew Zimmern "experiment" and will move into the old "Satellite Sisters" 11-to-1 slot. After that, starting Monday, Stephanie Hansen a Friend of LoJ's (as the girls are called around the station), will occupy the 1-to-3 slot. Her co-host is TBA.

This is one of the main reasons I got out of radio after 20 years. Employers don't value their on-air talent. They use them up and discard them, instead of getting rid of incompetent operations managers and program directors who make bad decisions. I met John Hines a couple of times. The first was when he spoke to my class at the Brown Institute broadcasting school. I met him again a couple of years later in Nashville at the Country Radio Seminar, when he was just getting started in Country radio himself. He's genuinely a nice guy. During the Hines and Bergland days I lived in a two-cow town in Minnesota, too far from the Twin Cities to pick up the show, but I still knew who John Hines was.

I was listening to KTLK this week as I always do, starting at 6am pretty much through 7pm. It dawned on me this morning that I had not heard John Hines for a couple of days. So I went to his KTLK web page only to find it gone. So I Googled John Hines and ended up here. I am so totally disappointed to read that he had been removed. Langden Perry may be a nice guy but in no way does he come close to John's upbeat and cheery attitude in the morning. I'm tempted to go back to KQ in the morning until Dan Conrey comes on. If they move Dan to the early morning slot and bring Glenn Beck into Dan's slot, I will turn off my radio until Rush comes on. I would often email John while he was on the air and many times he would read my emails. I ran into John this year at the Rosemount parade. What a great guy he is. It's too bad that he got jacked around like he did. I have enjoyed KTLK's shows all day long up to the end of Jason's show. It's too bad that people can come in and rearrange things to what they think are better when so many of us are enjoying the current status. I will miss John

Mike McLean's e mail about the departure of John Hines from KTLK is indicative of the day long right wing and non-instructive chatter on the station. KLTK programming is like an electric fan with a piece of cardboard taped to the fan guard. It goes, wap, wap, wap, wap all day and does not engage the listener. One of my friends listens to KLTK on drives to and from his job. Unfortunately, in a group he is not able to contribute any meaningful opinions because KTLK is his only source of verbal input. This sucks. I wasn't Happy when John First came to KTLK but after listening I really liked him. I used to listen to him when I was a kid on WLOL. He brought a little humor to the show. Langdon is funny but IS funnier when playin off John. I too may have to go to KQ until Dan Conry comes on. I love KTLK's format If they're not going to bring John Hines back put Dan Conry on fm 7 to 11.

I don't think I'll be listening to KTLK morning show now that John is gone. He woke me up and made me laugh every day. I've given Langdon a chance, but he just doesn't bring enough life to my day. I'll be looking for John across the radio dial and will listen whatever format he ends up in.

KTLK you made a huge mistake by removing John Hines from the morning drive. Since the day he arrived I dropped listening to KSTP 1500. John was the best morning personality you could ever hope to get. I was shocked when he left and have gone back to KSTP 1500. Langdon puts me to sleep. He is so bad; it stuns me you don't see it. The day John Hines shows up on any other radio station's morning drive, I will tune it in permanently. Dan Conry is wonderful, but he needs to go back to late afternoons; even his theme songs were better back then. KTLK good luck to you. A WCCO want-a-be. Who wants that? Actually GO DON SHELBY. You can't compete with WCCO. Serves you right.

it is sad to see an intelligent and provacative radio personality to be stripped from the air. his open minded discussion of any topic was refreshing to listen to even if your minnesota nice. We believe you can be nice and intelligent too. no doubt he will be picked up by a station that realizes talk shows don;t always have to politically correct. He talked of many subjects that were refreshing to hear in the a.m. with a sense of humor. Good luck with the new program but i am not interested.

I, too, kept wondering when John Hines would be back. The more I heard him the more I liked him. He was warm and funny and KTLK made a big mistake letting him go (to save a buck). I will look elsewhere in the morning, because Langdon isn't nearly as good. (I enjoyed both of them together, however.) I always listen to Jason Lewis and catch Rush when I can. Wherever John Hines lands, I'll switch to listening to him. Now that I know why he was probably dropped, I don't plan to listen to KTLK in the morning anymore. What a disappointment. (And his bits about his mom were funny, too.) Sigh. TrishP

#1- I really loved the jazz music played on 100.3 before the switch. Once I got over that, I really liked listening to Sara and Bryan. I find myself on the fence politically a lot of the time and it was refreshing to hear both sides. I was ticked when I turned on the radio and they were no more. So I dial jumped for a while. I too listened to John on WLOL when I was in high school and was excited to have the chance to listen to him every day. Once again, KTLK has disappointed me. I like Dan Conry. He gets his point across with out being a loud Jason. Good luck to him.. Hope he isn't next. I will not listen to KTLK going forward. I'll be watching for you John Heinz. ALSO, I appreciate this web page.. you'd not believe how long it took me to find this info and I appreciate it. Thanks

I know this has taken me awile to get to but I want to voice my opinion. John Hines being on in the morning on KTLJK is the reason I listened. I had heard John before on K102. I met him and became friends with him with his work with the M S Society. I suggest that if you are not going to bring back John give Dan Conry his time slot and let Landon Perry go fine John and study under him for another ten years. Then Landon might be half as good as John. Gary

Yeah, I miss John in the mornings. I would usually go back and forth from KTLK and JACK depending on whether there were commericals or if the subject was interesting. Now, I mostly stick with JACK. (Oh, and K102) As a very conservative republican, I enjoy most of the programming at KTLK (especially Rush and Jason Lewis) but I can't stand Sean Hannity and Glen Beck was difficult to listen to. Dan Connery (I always spell it like Sean Connery, 'cause Dan is so cool) is great, but my schedule never allows me to listen to him. If he got the morning gig, I would like that tremendously. But there was always something about John that was comforting. Like an old familiar friend (I am old enough to remember WLOL) I just enjoyed listening to him. Well, he will be back. Somewhere. I am glad he is getting severence. I hope he enjoys the break. Oh, and why would KTLK want to be like WCCO?? WCCO is for old people. And Don Shelby is an @$$.

I too, was appalled when I could no longer find John Hines on KTLK. I really enjoyed his program, and the fairness with which he handled all subjects and guests. I also enjoyed his visits with the man who is serving in Iraq. (I can't spell his name). Anyway, will be looking for him on other stations.....I hope he is on very soon.

I never listened to KTLK before John Hines came on the station. I enjoyed his program very much. I listened to him since WLOL. I followed him from K102 to KTLK. Now that he is no longer on KTLK, your station is off of my favorites and will not be listened to again. You have made a very big mistake by letting John go.

I listen to KTLK all the time and enjoy most of the programing but the morning show has always been a gaping hole the in line up. I gave John Hines a chance but most of the time he came across, while being nice, as an uninformed scatter brain. You can still be funny and be up to speed with current events and have an intelligable opinion. John Hines wasn't that. I am interested in what they will bring on board next. JS

I loved John WAY BACK from the WLOL days. Now, as I'm FAR from right wing, I didn't listen to KTLK, but my husband did. And they are going to be missing a dear talent. I wish him the BEST of luck and hope he stays around the Cities.

I have wondered all this time what happened to John. I am not a conservative by any stretch but I always listened if John was on. I'm glad he is ok, I thought he was maybe dead and not because he's old, either,I am the same age...anyway,I'm relieved. As to Langdon Perry,I think he is a condescending, arrogant know it all that should go somewhere else, he acts like a spoiled sports personality.

I love Dan Conry and again he is missing in action. I have emailed lKTLK expressing my disappointment about Dan's absence and have not received a response. As far as I am concerned they should drop Sean Hannity, he is getting boring and his ego is really hard to take. Glen Beck, Dan Conry and Jason Lewis are the best.
